Whimsical & Elegant Italian Neoclassical Pair of Patinated Bronze Ewers, Large Scale, Late 19th Century
GeneralPair of 19th century patinated bronze ewers in the Italian Neoclassical style of ancient Greco-Roman influences. The pair of ewers are large in scale and feature a patinated bronze black body and bronze colour scheme. The bronze neck, spout and ornately scrolled handle are decorated with an abundance of acanthus leaves and foliate imagery patterns to include a winged cherub on the top of the handle that extends downward ending in an elaborately cast ram’s head. The patinated bronze black body is encircled by the joyful dance of cherubs. The ewer base is rounded and waisted in bronze high relief circular foliate patterns.
The cherub sitting on top of each jug adds an element of whimsical elegance, overlooking the entire scene with a playful demeanor. Historically, jugs were more than just containers for pouring liquids, they were symbols of abundance and hospitality. The fine craftsmanship and luxurious materials of these jugs make them not only practical, but also a symbol of wealth and sophistication.
