Matched Pair of French Louis XV–Louis XVI Transitional Style Marquetry Commodes

A handsome matched pair of French Louis XV–Louis XVI Transitional style commodes, richly decorated with fine marquetry, parquetry, bronze mounts and shaped marble tops.

The two commodes share the same elegant serpentine form, proportions, bronze hardware and marble tops, while each is individually decorated with a different central marquetry composition. One features a finely detailed flower-filled urn, while the companion piece is decorated with a classical trophy motif, creating a complementary rather than identical pair.

The drawer fronts and side panels are further embellished with geometric parquetry and contrasting veneers, all framed by finely cast bronze borders. Additional bronze decoration includes ribbon-tied swags, wreath-form drawer pulls, scrolling foliate mounts, corner ornaments and sabots.

Each commode is surmounted by a substantial shaped and moulded marble top that follows the contours of the case.

The combination of graceful curved lines associated with the Louis XV period and the more symmetrical, neoclassical ornament of the Louis XVI period is characteristic of the Transitional style.

An elegant and highly decorative matched pair, ideal for use on either side of a fireplace, in a dining room, living room or formal entrance.
