Lucille Gilling began her art studies at the Kansas City Art Institute and later at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts. After graduating, she continued her art training overseas in Paris, Italy, and England, where she met and married her second husband, a Canadian military officer, in 1942. After the war they moved to Canada, where Gilling studied etching under the noted artists Nicholas Hornyansky and Guillermo Silva Santamaria, as well as under Andre Bieler and George Swinton. She joined the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1958 and exhibited her work in several galleries in the environs of Toronto.
