Elegant English Late Victorian “Georgian Revival Style” Biscuit Box, by Quality Sheffield Silverplate Manufacturer James Deakin & Sons, Circa 1880-1900

This elegant English silverplate biscuit box, dating to the late Victorian period (circa 1880–1900), is made in the Georgian Revival style, reflecting the renewed interest in 18th-century English silver forms that became fashionable in the late 19th century.  This one is in the form of a wooden Georgian Wine cooler.

The cylindrical body is raised on three slender legs joined by stretchers, a form inspired by Georgian sterling silver biscuit barrels and tea table accessories of the late 18th century. The domed lid is surmounted by a distinctive finial engraved “BISCUITS” a charming and practical feature typical of Victorian tablewares used during afternoon tea service. The bright silver-plated surface is decorated with simple horizontal bands, giving the piece a refined and balanced appearance consistent with classical Georgian design.

The piece bears a series of pseudo hallmarks including “JD&S,” identifying the maker as James Deakin & Sons of Sheffield, a well-known English manufacturer of high-quality silverplate. Founded in 1876, the firm produced a wide range of electroplated tableware and decorative objects during the late Victorian era. Like many Sheffield manufacturers, the company often used decorative hallmark-style symbols to imitate the appearance of traditional sterling silver assay marks while clearly identifying plated wares.

Biscuit barrels such as this were an important part of the Victorian tea table, used to serve sweet biscuits or cakes alongside tea in middle- and upper-class households. The form is directly inspired by earlier Georgian silver examples, which explains the classical proportions, raised legs, and restrained decorative detailing seen in this piece.

Decorative Victorian biscuit boxes remain appealing today as both functional serving pieces and charming decorative accents.
