England’s Iconic Shelley Potteries, Definitively Rare Art Deco Teacup & Saucer, “Garland of Flowers” Pattern of Black & White Geometric/ Floral Designs on the Classic Queen Anne Shape: Circa 1925
China Patterns, Gift IdeasThis rare Shelley teacup and saucer, known as “Garland of Flowers” is an iconic Art Deco design produced by Shelley Potteries between approximately 1925 and 1940. It is one of the earliest and most classic Art Deco patterns produced by the company that was located within the Stoke-on-Trent, a region that has a rich history of being the heart of the English pottery industry. The factory operated under the name Wileman & Co. until around 1910, when the trade name changed to Shelley China, and officially to Shelley Potteries Ltd. in 1929. The Shelley family maintained ownership and management of the factory at this location until the company was acquired by Allied English Potteries in 1966. All of the original Shelley facilities have since been demolished, though the history of the location is well documented.
The teacup and saucer features a black floral print pattern on a white bone china ground. The design is characterized by stylized, hanging garlands or baskets of flowers around the borders of the pieces. The crisp black-and-white colour scheme, combined with the angular, geometric lines of the Queen Anne shape, creates a definitive Art Deco aesthetic. The pieces also have hand-enamelled black rims to complete the look.
The Art Deco black and white floral pattern was applied to the distinctive and highly sought-after “Queen Anne” shape, which is noted for its elegant, eight-sided, somewhat square form, rather than the typical round shape of most china. The “Garland of Flowers” design (Pattern No. 11504) was entered into the Shelley pattern book in October 1926, shortly after the Queen Anne shape itself was registered in August 1926. Pieces feature the Shelley back stamp used during this period, including the pattern number 11504 and the registration number 723404.
The pattern is considered rare and highly collectible due to its strong Art Deco style, the popularity of the Queen Anne shape, and the historical Shelley Potteries legacy. Please note there are 2 teacups and saucers available and are sold separately. There is also a separate matching Shelley “tea set” listing.
