England’s Popular Coalport Fine Bone China, Vibrant “Indian Tree” Pattern Dinner Set for 12 with Scalloped Edge, Includes a Cake Plate, Circa 1900

The Coalport “Indian Tree” pattern is a highly recognizable and popular design, first introduced by Coalport in 1801, inspired by ancient Chinese and Indian textile motifs.  The central feature is a stylized, winding tree trunk with abundant, exotic blossoms and foliage. This main motif is surrounded by smaller floral elements. The scalloped version, specifically, features an irregular, wavy rim, often with alternating short and long sections, that is a hallmark of Coalport’s interpretation. The pattern  uses a vibrant, multicolour palette, including greens, pinks and blues. The edges of the scalloped rim and other accents feature hand-gilding (gold trim).

“Indian Tree” pattern by Coalport is a highly collectible bone china design that was produced over many years, starting in the late 19th or early 20th century. The green mark including a crown and the word “England” (above the crown) dates to around the turn of the century (1895-1900).

The scalloped or “wavy,” edge is a common characteristic of older, hand-decorated versions of the pattern. A dinner service for 12 (& cake plate) of the Coalport “Indian Tree” pattern dinnerware with a scalloped edge is rare to find as a single lot.
