Exotic Early Royal Doulton Burslem Vase 1891-1901, Hand Painted & Signed by Doulton Artist Samuel Wilson, Exceptionally Rare & 30 Inches Tall
PorcelainsAn impressively exotic and large ( 30.5″ tall) Doulton Burslem vase stamped to the underside of the base. The Burslem factory of Doulton & Co. became Royal Doulton in 1901. This change occurred after King Edward VII granted a “Royal Warrant” and the mark then included “Royal”. This fantastical vase was most likely a commission or exhibition piece from between 1891-1901. Signed by the artist Samuel Wilson who worked at Doulton Burslem from 1880-1909.
Beautiful floral paintings of white Chrysanthemums with large amounts of raised gilding details by Samuel Wilson. The very tall and elegantly shaped ovoid vase has a large body with a slender neck and richly gilded to the inside with a flared rim. The body of the vase has meticulously hand painted floral “cartouche” areas trimmed in gold or gilt applied to highlight details and add a luxurious touch. Three dimensionally textured and richly adorned with raised inspired “allegorical” busts/serpents/foliate imagery that cover the entire circumference down to the raised circular base. Foliate scrolled “handles” flank the waist and these motifs extend up the neck to the rim.
In the 1880s, Doulton Burslem produced some of the most elaborately decorated vases, particularly evidenced in this example with the hand-painted floral cartouches and elaborate gold accents. This piece also features raised high relief decoration work and intricate patterns, that were highly sought after for their artistic merit and craftsmanship. An exceptional and rare Doulton Burslem monumental vase.
