v** SOLD ARCHIVES **vA lovely bronze sculpture of a Panther laying on rocky ground. The animal sits in a very stoic pose and there is great detail in this animal sculpture by Antoine Louis Barye (1795-1875). Barye was an artist known for his animal subjects.
The bronze is produced by the Ferdinand Barbedienne foundry in the mid to late 19th century (circa 1876).
Barbedienne purchased 125 casting models from the late Antoine Louis Barye’s sale in 1876. He set about casting and selling editions of these sculptures which was very successful, devoting an entire catalogue to these works.
Antoine-Louis Barye, (born September 24, 1795, Paris, France—died June 25, 1875, Paris), prolific French sculptor, painter, and printmaker whose subject was primarily animals. He is known as the father of the modern Animalier school.
