v** SOLD ARCHIVES **vFrance, late 19th century
Height: 20½ inches
A finely cast and beautifully patinated bronze figure of Atalanta, the swift-footed heroine of Greek mythology, produced by the renowned Parisian founder Ferdinand Barbedienne. The athletic huntress is depicted mid-stride in a dynamic running pose beside a cut tree trunk, her drapery swept back to emphasize movement and grace. The modelling is crisp and naturalistic, capturing both the strength and elegance for which Atalanta was celebrated.
The sculpture is signed “F. Barbedienne Fondeur” on the reverse of the tree trunk and bears the circular coin mark “A. Collas – Réduction Mécanique” on the top of the base — a mark associated with Achille Collas’ mechanical reduction process, used by Barbedienne to produce precise and high-quality bronze editions.
Barbedienne bronzes are widely regarded for their exceptional casting quality and rich, nuanced patinas. Classical female figures of this scale remain particularly desirable among collectors of 19th-century French bronzes.
A strong and decorative example of academic neoclassicism, ideal for display in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
