This “Happy Family” oil painting on canvas is a fine example of Bouter’s work depicting a traditional “tender ” interior scene of a mother and her children working and playing. Illuminated by the soft light of an adjacent window, Bouter’s great skill is evidenced especially in the “sweet portraits” of the children and their mother cast in the sunlight. The details of the composition, with the family framed in their “cocoon” and the sophistication of the colour and brushwork bring a true sense of warmth to the viewer.
