Japanese Carved Netsuke of Intertwined Chinese Zodiac Animals on a Circular Ebony Stand c.1890
v** SOLD ARCHIVES **vA well carved Japanese Ivory netsuke showing an intertwined figural grouping of Zodiac animals (horse, rat, dragon, dog, monkey, etc.), sitting on a round ebony stand. The carving is signed with a Japanese symbol. This dates circa 1890.
A netsuke is a small sculptural object (carved button-like ornament) worn for hundreds of years in Japan as a functional and aesthetic piece and used to suspend articles from the sash of a kimono.
Please be aware that this piece cannot be exported out of Canada as per the CITES treaty.
The netsuke with stand measures 1 1/2 inches tall x 1 1/2 inches in diameter and is in excellent condition.
