Josephinenhütte Iridescent Enamelled Glass Three-Handled Loving Cup, circa 1885

A fine late 19th-century Josephinenhütte three-handled loving cup, circa 1885, blown in pale green iridescent glass and decorated with elaborate enamel and gilding in the Islamic Revival taste.

The cup has a gently flared rim, rounded body, and three applied twisted glass handles. The surface is richly ornamented with hand-painted enamel scrollwork, strapwork, stylized floral motifs, and raised gilt detailing, with a complementary decorative border around the lower body. The soft iridescent surface gives the glass a subtle luminous quality, shifting between pale green, gold, and silvery tones.

This form is illustrated as a Josephinenhütte iridescent loving cup decorated in the Islamic style, dating to circa 1885. The three-handled form, often referred to as a loving cup or tyg, was produced as a decorative cabinet piece and reflects the late 19th-century Central European fascination with historicist and Islamic-inspired ornament.

Josephinenhütte, Bohemia/Silesia, circa 1885.
