Monumental French Pair of Vases by Edmé Samson et Cie, Paris, Hand Painted Porcelain Scene of a Courting Couple in a Continous Landscape with Gilt Decoration & Ram’s Head Handles, Circa 1880-1900, Height: 21 inches

A magnificent pair of large hand-painted porcelain vases attributed to Edmé Samson et Cie, Paris, late 19th century. Each vase is richly decorated in the Louis XV / Rococo Revival style, featuring beautifully detailed romantic pastoral scenes known as “Watteau scenes” after the famous French Rococo painter. We see a courting couple within a continuous idyllic landscape that wraps around the central vase perimeter, and framed to the top and bottom by elaborate gilt and enamel borders.

The flared cobalt-blue necks are adorned with gilt vertical motifs and elegant scroll handles terminating in finely modelled ram’s heads, a classic Samson motif echoing earlier 18th-century Sevres designs. The circular bases are painted with additional landscape scenes, bordered by stylized acanthus leaves and pink accents. In excellent condition overall.

These impressive vases exemplify the exceptional quality and artistry for which Samson of Paris became renowned-meticulous hand-painting, vibrant enamels, and luxurious gilding. A truly decorative and highly collectible pair suitable for a grand interior, mantel, or console display.
