Monumental Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. Silver Plated Presentation Epergne – dated 1886

An exceptionally large and elaborate American silver-plated presentation epergne by Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co., dated September 1886.

The impressive multi-tiered centrepiece is arranged with a tall flared trumpet vase above three boat-shaped bowls, each with richly gilt interiors, engraved decoration and scrolling terminals. The central standard is embellished with finely cast classical figures and ornamental supports, rising from a substantial architectural base with engraved borders, gilt highlights and decorative feet.

The epergne was created as a presentation piece. One side is engraved “Welcome Home,” while the opposite side bears the name of the recipient together with the date September 1886. This personal inscription gives the piece added historical character and suggests it was commissioned to commemorate an important return or homecoming.

A remarkable example of late 19th-century American presentation silver plate, distinguished by its monumental scale, elaborate Renaissance Revival design and highly decorative combination of silvered and gilded surfaces.
