Richard Budd was an acclaimed Royal Worcester & Coalport artist who painted mainly fruit on Royal Worcester porcelain (vases, plates, cups etc…).
The Royal Worcester fruit scenes by this artist are rare and are highly sought after.
Richard Budd was born in Worcester on March 11, 1915 and worked as a freelance ceramic artist from his home in Northwick for most of his life. He joined the Worcester Royal Porcelain Company straight from school, where he worked from the ages of 16 to 18, apprenticed to Harry Davis, often cited as Royal Worcester’s greatest ever artist. Budd decided to go it alone in 1932. He joined the clothing trade and sold clothing to farmers to support his painting. During the Second World War, Budd worked in a factory in Longbridge, near Birmingham, on Lancaster bombers. He later recalled this period in his life as a time of great struggle, but he persevered and eventually rose to great heights and became a freelance ceramic artist, producing items with his own backstamp, as well as taking commissions from several well known china houses, such as Coalport. He eventually found his work gaining plaudits and international recognition as it was sold and distributed all over the world. Some of his more notable clients included the British Royal family as well as the royal family of the Netherlands. Amongst his most famous works was a plaque which he painted for the wedding of Charles and Diana in 1982. His work has become much sought after his death at the age of 87 in 2002.
