Spiritual German Porcelain Plaque After Heinrich Hofmann’s (1824-1911) Oil Painting “The Boy Jesus In The Temple”, 19th Century

,

This spiritual hand painted porcelain plaque is a portrait of the “Boy Jesus” from a larger oil painting on canvas called “The Boy Jesus in the Temple” by the famous 19th century German religious master painter Heinrich Hofmann (1824-1911). The original larger painting by Hofmann was completed in 1881 and is in the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden, Germany. Hofmann’s style of painting was unique in its own way but at the same time he based his work on the traditional art of old German, Dutch and Italian masters. While in Rome he came in touch with the Nazarenes and throughout his life he remained faithful to the great examples of the Renaissance. There are copies of the original painting, including one in the Riverside Church in New York City painted by Elisabeth Ritschen, an apprentice of Hofmann’s.

This porcelain of the “Boy Jesus” is a portrait detail of the larger original work, hand painted in the “oval” after Hofmann’s “Renaissance style”.   The frame label on the back indicates its origin ” 71 Rue de la Madeleine” Brussels.  The frame is very ornate detailed layers with a wood base of red velvet, covering a “shield shape. The porcelain is in excellent condition, however the frame shows its historical age and use as a religious object.
