Stately English Victorian Rosewood & Detailed Brass Inlay Vanity Travel Box, Circa 1850

This gorgeous Mid 19th century English Rosewood travel vanity box is of a rectangular form with brass edging and brass stringing that frame the lid and front. To the top of the box there is a framed brass plaque engraved ” H. Hubbard”, and a flush mounted brass front handle below a brass barrel escutcheon.  The interior reveals an inset mirror to the lid, several dividers and compartments that are outfitted with vanity glass containers that have either silver topped lids or glass stoppers.

The vanity accessories include 8 glass containers for jewelry, scents, or ink:  1 rectangular glass box with a silver lid in an “open cut” foliate design, 2 circular glass containers with silver lids, 2 square glass ink bottles with cut glass stoppers, 1 cut crystal scent bottle with an engraved silver twist lid, 1 cut glass scent bottle with a cut glass stopper, and 1 tall scent bottle with a twist silver lid.  The compartments “tray” also includes vanity accessories of 2 carved “crowns” in mother of pearl as handles for a  “button loop” and “tweezers”. A silver lid possibly for a clothes brush, and a once red velvet fitted pin cushion which with “age and use” is respectively missing or worn. The fitted compartment layer or tray lifts to reveal a second interior storage space.

The most unusual feature is a small, hidden brass button or locking pin which triggers a spacious, jewelry drawer below in “magenta purple” velvet. The brass top plaque, front brass key ecutcheon and inset front and two side brass handles just add to the elegance of the materials. These rare wooden boxes were historically, originally for gentlemen “aristocratic” travellers in the late 18th century and then later in the Victorian era for women well.

This beautiful box is definately a collector’s item that includes many lovely accessories in good condition and dates to the Victorian period, circa 1850.
