Unusual & Endearing Watercolour after British Artist Sydney Ernest Wilson (b. 1869) Mezzotint: “Nature, The Calmady Children” 1913

A very endearing “unsigned watercolour” after a coloured mezzotint by British artist Sydney E. Wilson entitled “Nature, The Calmady Children” 1913.

Sydney Ernest Wilson (B. 1869) was a British engraver working in London in the late 19th century, known for his accurate engravings based on oils by Morland, Gainsborough, and other celebrated British painters of the 18th and 19th century. Wilson was a master of the English mezzotint revival style of the early 1900’s.

The original painting was done in 1823 by British artist Sir Thomas Lawrence (1789-1830) ” The Calmady Children (Emily, 1818–?1906, and Laura Anne, 1820–1894)” .   The Metropolitan Museum NYC has the well documented original painting. The rosy cheeks, rumpled chemises, and tumbling curls of Emily and Laura Anne Calmady reflect a new admiration for childhood and innocence that found expression in the portraiture of the early nineteenth century. Rather than depicting his sitters as miniature adults, Lawrence idealized the sweetness of youth and the affectionate bond between sisters. The artist once described the portrait as “my best picture . . . one of the few I should wish hereafter to be known by.”

The original painting was in a circular format which only adds to the uniqueness of the image. The gilded ornate frame is in very good condition and reflects the era and aesthetics of the warm bond between the children.
