Very Grand French Empire “Vincenti” Long Case Clock Dated 1855, Mahogany with Bronze Mounts & Cherubs
v** SOLD ARCHIVES **vA very impressive and grand mid 19th Century French Empire long case mahogany clock with bronze and gilded ormolu mounts. The works are marked by Vincenti with the Medaille D’Argens Vincenti 1855 stamp. This spectacular free standing clock, is designed in the “leitmotif of the cherub” and has a rectangular shaped mahogany tall body housing the pendulum and a base, all richly applied with gilt bronze foliate detailing. Three large bronze cherubs, in an inverted triangular dynamic, with playfully animated poses are perched on billowing bronze “clouds” that engulf the circular clock face. Imagine all in bronze, a singular cherub floating at the bottom of clouds and appearing to be happily “holding up the timekeeper of the heavens”. The clock itself has enamelled roman numerals in a “tortoise shell” pattern. The clock movement is an eight day cycle striking every half hour.
