A Large 19th Century Japanese Bronze Geisha & Lantern Grouping – Signed – Meiji Period.
v** SOLD ARCHIVES **vA very large grouping of a Japanese Geisha standing beside a pagoda shaped lantern. The two bronze items stand on a oblong bronze base which sits in a carved wood base. The quality of the bronze castings is very fine. The Geisha holds a scroll in her hands with writing on it, she also wears a kimono with the belt polychrome painted in green with painted gilt dots. The lantern was originally an incense burner which was later electrified, but has no components of electrical work anymore except a hole in the back for a wire. It can be easily re-wired into a lamp if desired.
The base of the bronze is signed by the artist – which is unknown to me.
The piece is from the Meiji period and dates late 19th century circa 1870-1880.
Measures: 23 inches long x 20 inches high.
