v** SOLD ARCHIVES **vA very bold marine scene by British artist Henry Dawson (1811-1878). The scene is a large Sailing ship on the sea at dusk – the ship is sailing into the sunset – the sun bursting through from behind the dark moody clouds. The painting canvas is on a square 24 x 24 inch stretcher but is framed in a circle and laid down on board.
Signed on the lower left “Dawson ’55” (dated 1855) – Also Stamped on the board on the back – ‘LW BOARD’

Henry Dawson was a marine and landscape painter who was born in Hull. He lived in Nottingham until 1844, when he moved to Liverpool to study at the Academy. He studied art with J. B. Pyne before moving, but was mainly self-taught in Liverpool, where after he soon acquired patrons. He moved to Croydon in 1850 and was encouraged by Ruskin to exhibit at the RA, where he exhibited 28 works. He also exhibited 33 paintings at the British Institute and 6 at the Suffolk Street Galleries. Prior to moving down south he exhibited at the Liverpool Academy and the Nottingham Gallery. He is represented at Ferens A. G., Hull and at the Castle Museum, Nottingham.
